About the Artist

At this point in my life I am in the odd paradoxical position of being  an "emerging artist" moving into my" senior years". It is an interesting place to be.  On one hand, there is  a sense of urgency driving my practice and life experiences that demands to be woven into the art work. On the other, I am a bit like a kid in a candy store, barely able to take in the wide open spaces of the creative process and the variety of media available to me (if I only had enough time!).

My art practice has evolved in the last number of years into two distinct but increasingly overlapping areas:

  •  Sculpture:  Drawn to materials that do not necessarily "play well together", my"palette" is mainly kiln formed glass, cement, stone, and metal artifacts retrieved from the local junkyard.   I enjoy the  process challenge of mastering and integrating these materials into a coherent whole.
  • Painting: After many years of landscape and figure drawing, I felt a need to more closely study the elements of painting and composition. Working with Jane Davies and others for the past 5 years,  I have been exploring the world of  abstraction and non-objective painting through mixed media,  pastel and collage.  It is both a daunting and exciting adventure that brings together my previous artistic disciplines and moves them forward.

After 10 years of part time study, I graduated from the Haliburton School of Fine Arts in 2009 with a Diploma in Fine Arts.   I have also studied at glass schools in Germany (Bildwerk Frauenau- 2012) and New Zealand (Whanganui Glass School under Kathryn Wightman- 2013) .   For four years I was a member of the Sadleir House Life Drawing Group.

In my previous work life,  I have been an adult educator, career counsellor and community developer. I have had the opportunity to work in government, non-profit organizations and as an entrepreneur. My previous work experience -for example assisting displaced workers for 10 years  - profoundly shapes and informs my art.
